The Division of Banks is a Craftian federal division in the state of Meyang. It is one of the original 75 divisions contested at the first federal election. It is named after Dalton Banks (1783–1851), an English-born democracy activist and campaigner for racial equality. The division is located in the central business district of Troll City, covering the affluent inner suburbs of the city's urban core.
The sitting member, since the 2056 by-election, is Terrence Goewey, a member of the National United Party.
History[]
Banks is an idiosyncratic electorate, voting very differently to other seats. It is often held by a particular party for a long period of time before swinging heavily to another party, often while having relatively large margins on paper. Since 2007, no party has held the seat for fewer than three terms. Historically, the seat has tended to lean towards the Craftian Conservative Party, as the wealthier suburbs in the north generally outnumbered the poorer suburbs in the south. The Conservatives' advantage in the seat has been offset by the presence of the Liberal Party of Craftia, which often runs open preference tickets in Banks – the result being a more even distributions preference between the Conservatives and United from the Liberals.
Conservative leader John Hammond held the seat for 22 years from 2034 to 2056; following his resignation, the Conservative Party lost the ensuing by-election in a record landslide defeat.
